Your brand is the perception of your company in the minds of the people interacting with it. It's not what you say it is, it's what they say it is.
Every marketing campaign, billboard, email, or even the furniture in your office affects your brand. That's why it's impossible to have a perfect brand. It's not up to you.
With that being said, it's very important to determine how you want people to feel about your company or organization. Once you've done this you can have tight control over your brand and make it your greatest weapon.
Design can't be good or bad. What it can be is fitting or not fitting. Each brand or idea demands a unique expression to be successful. This is why the rules of design are hard to determine.
What design NEEDS to do is communicate clearly to the audience, and be functional. It's delivering a specific message and positively affecting the branding.
